In this blog, one of my favorite topics to blog about is backlinks because of their importance for generating free organic traffic. Some marketers get the concept of generating backlinks but fail to grasp the full understanding of how they work. There is a reason why the site with 5 inbound links outranks the site with 500 inbound links.

The answer lies in the anchored text links being used and the quality of your inbound links.

To get better results which your incoming links, you need to use your keywords as the anchored text. For example, if your keyword is “get money fast” and you are using your web address alone for you backlink, then you won’t be making great use of your inbound links. Even though you have 500 inbound links, you competitor may still beat you with 5 inbound links with the anchored text “get money fast”.

Another factor involved in determining your search rankings are the page ranks and outbound links from the websites that are linked to yours. When you think of it, it should all make sense. If for example you have 500 websites with a PR 0 rankings and no outgoing links linking to your site, the inbound link will not be as relevant as having 5 sites with PR 5 rankings and 150 outgoing links each.

The quantity of inbound links is important for search engine optimization, but the quality and your choice of keywords will prove to be the determining factor for increasing your search engine rankings.

A few months ago I decided to check the status of link building campaign. I entered my url into the backlink checker and to my surprise, the majority of my backlinks were generated by social networking sites. I was expecting something totally different, to tell you the truth I thought that my article marketing efforts was going to yield me the best efforts, I was completely surprised. Social networking and Social bookmarking sites was responsible for the majority of my total backlinks.

In the past ariticle marketing was my best source of getting thousands of backlinks to my website. I generated backlinks using article marketing by submitting 3 articles to a minimum of 50 directories every week. Using this strategy I was able to increase my backlinks tremendously because many of the articles that I submit get picked up by other directories or website owners looking for content for their websites. The process of generating backlinks while using article marketing generally takes few months. Lately with the use of a social bookmarking software, I am able to generate hundreds of backlinks daily.

The social bookmarking software I am talking about is able to post to hundreds of social networking and social bookmarking websites like Digg, Facebook, Sphinn with just one click. Being able to submit to so many high PR ranking social networks is like having the best of both worlds. One benefit is that you will receive high quality backlinks and the other hand you will also generate more traffic to your website. I use these social networks to announce every time I submit a new blog post or article to the directories.

In addition to the obvious possibilities of traffic generation and link building, there are other advantages to social networking websites. If you are lucky enough to have your article or blog post make the front page of some of these social networks, you just might need a new server. There have been many stories of servers crashing due to too much traffic from social networks such as Digg, Sphinn and Stumble Upon.

It took me a while to learn how to take advantage of these social networking websites, but I am glad I took time out to catch up with the rest of the world. Web 2.0 strategies has introduced internet marketing to whole new masses of people, adding these strategies to my backlink building arsenal has created better results with less time.

A reciprocal link is a link where you place a link on your site for which another website owner will place your link on their site in return. The problem that occurs when searching for reciprocal links is that if you are just starting out, then your page rank is zero. Most sites that are already established do not have any incentive to exchange links with you.

When that problem occurs, that is when you will need to get a little creative. We all know that Web 2.0 social networking sites have bombarded the internet, but what most people do not realize is that they are a great source of high Pr backlinks. You can set up an account with the social networks below, submit a blog or create a profile with a link to your website and voila!; you have created a quality backlink to your website.

Above is a few social networking site that provide quality backlins, but there are literally hundreds. It would take you hours daily to post your new updates to all of them, that’s why I use a social bookmarking software called The Book Demon. Another source for acquiring backlinks that usually goes unnoticed are RSS feeds. You can use RSS feed for a variety of reasons. One reason is that they provide great exposure for your website or blog. Once you submit your website to an RSS Feed Directory your feed can be subscribe to by numerous readers, thus creating great exposure for your website. RSS feeds are also a great backlinks tool, you not only generate backlinks every time your RSS feed is subscribe to, but you will also get free backlinks from each RSS feed directory you use to submit your website.

Below I have compiled a list of over 50 RSS feed directories that you can submit your website or blog to for absolutely free. There are also paid directories services available, but these will get you started.

For best results submit to about 15 directories at a time to spread the amount of traffic you will receive. Spreading your traffic will also help with you Google ranking. The search engines rank websites with consistent traffic higher. You also do not want to generate too many backlinks too fast, as to not raise any eyebrows with Google.
